Harper and Capital Punishment

I provide some political analysis in this Canwest News story on what kind of message Prime Minister Harper is sending on the issue of capital punishment.

Hint: He is trying to keep his base happy.

Oh puleeeze - another manufactured story by the MSM to play to the leftist base.

It works both ways, Gerry.

What a fabrication and absolutely assinine example of a media created and fed scare tactic. There is virtually no "base" in Canada that is FOR the death penalty. Most real "conservative minded" citizens are PRO LIFE - at any stage. So, Gerry - the real story here is trying to invent another "hidden agenda" item isn't it and you are feeding the frenzy.
Remember, in this case in the US the guy's lawyers want him to finish his sentance in Canada where a life sentance is not really life. In one interview he said he sould then get out in 5 years. The family of the victims he murdered are horrified that he could get clemency like this and the Governor won't let him go. The death penalty is currently undergoing political discussion in that state so this guy is really not in any jeopardy of losing his life. He wants all of you bleeding hearts to get him a get out of jail free card instead. Sheesh Gerry - you have really sunk to some new lows lately.

What I get a kick out of, in terms of the extradition argument, is it's the same people that scream "Sovereignty!" every time someone in the US says anything that might tend to impact internal politics in Canada, that seem to have no issue with Canada imposing itself in a political discussion (Capital Punishment) in the US....

Is the US not a sovereign Republic itself? Does the US not have the right to determine its own policies, including how to deal with murderers (often multiple times so)?

How silly of me, expecting consistency in arguments from the left...

I think you're probably right, Gerry. Where do you think the secret hints to keep the libertarians happy are?

I think that the CPC isn't worried about losing them to, say, the Libertarian Party like they are about losing the socons to, say, the Christian Heritage Party. And that's a shame, but it's also the fault of Conservative libertarians that aren't as willing to vote with their feet.

Jeffg - You have a very valid point and that is why despite being opposed to the death penalty and being a liberal, I am somewhat reluctant to want to tell them what to do as I generally don't like other countries interferring in our domestic affairs. At the same time, I think most Canadians generally see things in right versus wrong and often forget about the sovereignty issue unless it is another country interferring with Canada's own decisions.
