Privatize Canda Post

The C.D. Howe says it's time to privatize Canada Post.

The group has come out with a report which says opening up the Postal service to competition would lead to innovation and better service.

And if any organization needed a dose of innovation it's the Post Office.

Just think about it. How do you mail a letter?

You stick a stamp in the upper right hand corner of an envelope -- which is exactly the same way you mailed a letter 200 years ago.

Can you think of any other group still using the same methods it used in the early 1800s?

I mean besides the Rolling Stones.

Yes! I would support this 100%.

Canada Post has long since abandoned the customer. Why not give folks a choice of service provider?

Maybe next in line is the CBC?

I think end the monopoly should be the first step, although I am open to the idea of privatizing Canada Post in the long-run. In fact with the internet and fax machines, I wonder if the mail will even exist in 20 years.

As for the Canadian Wheat Board, privatizing it if it kept its single desk selling status wouldn't change a thing. The real issue is whether there should be a single desk, dual market, or open market.

Of course, the other side of the story is, who paid CD Howe to conduct the study? FedEx? UPS? These think-tanks don't do research for free (think Fraser Institute, Cato, etc.).
